We are expanding our in-house development capabilities for our website CMS (Umbraco) that powers a number of National Express’ websites and is continually expanding. Reporting into our eCommerce Architect and working alongside our other CMS Web Developer and UK Digital Trading team, you’ll support us on delivering new functionality and continuous improvement.

You’ll be building and improving website widgets and functionality, optimising code, making recommendations for improvements and ensuring developments are fully tested and functional before release.

To succeed in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Front and back end web development.

  • Experience of working independently as well as within a small development team to varied and challenging objectives.

  • A passion for new challenges and learning new skills. Previous experience of working with open source CMS is essential.

Working in 1 month sprints in a small agile team that delivered over 100 enhancements in 2021, you’ll be able to see your work come to life and be used by millions of National Express customers. You’ll have the opportunity to generate and execute both your own ideas, and those addressed in various briefs from the team, along with the planning of future features.

This is a new role at National Express, and as such you will become an integral part of our Digital team. This role is based at our office in Digbeth with the option for flexible working (1+ days in the office) or full time office based. The majority of the team choose a flexible approach, working around 2 days in the office.

Key Aspects of the Role

  • Support the eCommerce Architect in delivering the Continuous Improvement plan.

  • Estimating workload of projects/requirements.

  • Building, testing and quality assurance of new functionality.

  • Understanding of usability, web accessibility and cross-browser/platform issues.

  • Liaising with internal departments to plan & prioritise workload.

Key Requirements

  • Experience of front end website development.

  • Previous experience of working with open source CMS.

  • Knowledge and understanding of HTML5, CSS/SASS and JavaScript (jQuery Framework).

  • Experience of developing in .Net framework, C#, MVC, SQL and APIs.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to work to specification while offering advice, suggestions and insight.

  • Must be flexible and adaptable to change.

  • Passionate about solving problems for our customers.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience of developing websites built with Umbraco CMS.

  • Using Google Analytics for insights and to make data driven decisions.

  • Using Google Tag Manager to add, test and remove tags.

  • Experience of working within an agile development team, adhering to Kanban or Scrum principles.
